Personality; Marisa Kirisame, the self-proclaimed "Ordinary Witch" is a bit of an infamous character in her native land of Gensokyo. A human in the land of youkai, she's a magician by trade, not by race, as many are. She manages to keep ahead of many of the (dangerous) native inhabitants by a mixture of magic, cleverness, and quite a bit of theft, thus earning her the ire of other fellow magic users, and many who would rather not have their homes raided in the morning hours. Despite this, she's an honest, straightforward woman, who does not easily hold a grudge and never holds back, be it feelings or power.

She lives for excitement, and indeed, tends to live in the moment more than anything else, often jumping into the many crises (or incidents) that plague gensokyo with nothing more than a rumor to direct her towards the right person. While powerful, Marisa has about the intuition of a brick, and doesn't much care to listen to what the "bad guys" say, instead choosing to "spark first, and ask questions later". It's only when she's done with the battle that she listens, often enjoying a drink with her "foe" and pleasantly considering them something akin to a friend. In Perfect Cherry Blossom, when winter refuses to end, she simply follows a hunch – flower petals on the wind – to lead her to the cause of the problem. She cheerfully and casually pursues this lead, without knowing anything about what she might be wandering into, but she is able to defeat opponent after opponent through her persistence. Other games follow a similar pattern of “investigation,” with Marisa tackling the plot through her rough-and-tumble methods.

Marisa has a nasty habit of stealing anything that catches her interest, in addition to hoarding anything that she "acquires", for good or for ill. She seems to have only a vague idea of the value of the things she takes, sometimes pocketing them simply because "other people want them" and sometimes taking them simply for ornamental purposes. She may get very offended if you confront her, but if you take it while she's not looking, she simply may not notice. She has, for example, a tendency to “borrow” even magic, and spellcards such as “Stardust Typhoon” and even her signature “Master Spark” are copied from someone else's (Patchouli Knowledge).

In terms of intelligence, Marisa is erratically smart. She shows a fair amount of technical logic, but her hasty personality causes her to act rashly and sometimes without reason. She is of the opinion that “"It ain't magic if it ain't flashy,” which means that she tends to focus on showmanship over practicality. She enjoys a challenge, however and often rises to the occasion with surprising success. As mentioned above, she steals her spells, but this in and of itself demonstrates a degree of prowess – it is akin to someone teaching themselves to play complicated piano music completely by hearing it, with no instruction whatsoever. This is an unusual amount of magical ability, especially for a human. Her logic can be hard to follow, often comprising a direct way of handing delicate and subtle issues. She tends to pick up "street smarts" quickly and knows how to keep her head down. (Despite this, she shows no shame in flat out lying, and is more inclined to be snarky than to admit blame? – “Since she typically accepts payment on success, she won't take any money at all in the case of failure, which is surprisingly forthright of her.”)

Not a lot can anger Marisa, but when she's mad, her passions are quick and decidedly deadly. The playful manner drops and suddenly the witch shows all of her prowess in the magical arts. Still, in her anger, she might not notice that her attacks are too densely clumped, and she will pay even less attention to her immediate surroundings. As for what will actually get her mad? A large amount of frustration can stem from her being prevented from doing what she wants, and quite a bit more can come from arrogant, smartass enemies (much like herself). She doesn't like to be looked down on, and likes it even less if you try to tell her what to do. She's not prone to murder, instead choosing to beat her opponents to a pulp and then mock them openly. Still, she doesn't have a good grasp of her own power and isn't used to fighting normal humans, so she might slip up and leave someone a little more singed than intended.

Marisa is not inclined to melancholy, and even then she's more prone to lashing out than sulking. She's often surprised, but almost never shocked, and tends to take life with a proactive, can-do attitude that may annoy those around her at first, then encourage them. She does sometimes waffle, usually when presented with a challenge that she can't Spark. In Symposium of Post Mysticism, Marisa plays host to a dialogue between various religious figures, and is at something of a loss as a moderator. This conversation on a deep philosophical topic isn't necessarily out of her mental league, but it is something she simply doesn't devote much time to. When she is unable to brush things off, then, she will simply laugh nervously and try to push through it regardless. Not hard to hate, and not hard to like, the speedy witch tends to zip around on her broomstick, often blasting dust and air into the eyes of unsuspecting passerby. When she's drunk, this is a dangerous thing indeed.

Marisa has connections to the two other magicians of her world, though one cannot call them friendships. The first, named Alice, is a magician who specializes in puppeteering and who treats Marisa with a sort of faint concern, though mostly she is cold. The other, Patchouli, is a librarian who treats Marisa like an annoyance, but sometimes turns to her in times of help. All three tend to collaborate when things get rough, but Marisa's brash personality and tendency towards the theft of magical artifacts separate her from her more thoughtful peers. Marisa tends to think of both of them as being a bit too stuffy and upright, and even looks down on them a little for not wanting a more active role not only in life, but also in the pursuit of knowledge. It is worth noting that while the above two are youkai and hundreds of years old, Marisa is fully human with no intention of ever changing that, though with magic she could. The only other person Marisa has a very clear bond with is Reimu. Reimu and Marisa are rivals, both in the youkai hunting business and while they don't directly compete, they do tend to cross paths and bump heads. There is both respect and frustration between them, as Reimu is a "born genius" and Marisa works (and steals) for her power. It is the knowledge that out there, there are people like Reimu who simply naturally come with great amounts of power and don't do anything with it that makes Marisa so fiery about her own work.

At the end of the day, Marisa is a cheerful, unrelenting force of magic in the world, neither looking for nor interested in any kind of purpose besides "have fun and blow stuff up". If you can stand to be around her for long enough to get to know her, then you'll find a steadfast (if stickyfingered) friend and a powerful companion.

"Ahh dammit... How the hell does it go again?"

Marisa stuck her face closer to the little pile of tinder, her nose almost brushing the fine strands. She makes another experimental strike with the flint, only to grumble as the sparks fizzle and fade, failing to take. With a sigh, she sits up, ramming her hat back in place.

"Jeez... Who knew that living without magic would be this difficult? How does anyone get anything done...?" She muttered to no one in particular as she watched the clouds drift.

Fire spells are easy, but fire itself is a tricky, finicky thing. She'd thought it would be easy, after all, people seemed to start fires all the time. Sometimes even accidentally. About an hour ago, she'd been deeply curious as to how the humans managed to get stoves to work back in the village. Now, she'd long since ceased to really care, but stubbornness kept her to the task. So here she was, screwing her eyes up and hoping that if she glared at the embers hard enough, they'd take. She hadn't thought that starting a fire without magic would be such a problem.

"Just one more good hit and- ah!"

She dropped the flint and frantically blew on the tiny glow until it burst into flame. It ate quickly, but glowed brightly against the fading evening air.

"Yes yes yes! I've still got it! Come on, little fire, you're my ticket to a hot dinner!" A thought hit her and she threw her hat down in frustration. She glared at her house, thinking of the stove that seemed so close mere moments before. "Dammit! Now how do I get it inside?!"
